Fragrance Basics: How to Choose and Wear Cologne Like a Pro

Choosing the right cologne can be confusing with thousands of options available, but understanding fragrance basics makes the process much simpler. The right fragrance should make you feel confident and complement your personal style.

Understand fragrance types. Fragrances are categorised by their concentration of fragrance oils. Eau de Cologne contains 2-4% oils and lasts about two hours. Eau de Toilette contains 5-15% oils and lasts three to four hours. Eau de Parfum contains 15-20% oils and can last six to eight hours. For everyday wear, Eau de Toilette offers a good balance. For special occasions or evening wear, Eau de Parfum provides longer-lasting scent.

Consider fragrance families. Fragrances fall into categories: fresh (citrus and aquatic), oriental (warm and sensual), woody (earthy and sophisticated), and aromatic (herbal and spicy). Understanding which families appeal to you narrows down your options significantly. Try fragrances in different families to discover what suits your personality.

Test before you buy. Never buy a fragrance without testing it first. Spray it on a test strip or your wrist and wear it for at least 15 minutes. Fragrances develop over time – the initial top notes fade and the heart notes emerge. What smells good in the first minute might not be what you want to wear all day.

Consider the season. Lighter, fresher fragrances work better in spring and summer, while heavier, warmer scents are ideal for autumn and winter. Your body temperature also affects how a fragrance smells – it will smell stronger in summer than winter.

Apply fragrance correctly. The best places to apply fragrance are on pulse points where your skin is warmest: your wrists, neck, inside your elbows, and behind your ears. Spray or dab fragrance onto these areas – don't rub your wrists together as this breaks down the fragrance molecules. One or two spritzes is usually enough; you want people to notice it when they're close to you, not from across the room.

Make it last longer. Apply fragrance to moisturised skin as hydrated skin holds scent better. Consider applying an unscented moisturiser first, then your fragrance. You can also layer fragrances by using a matching shower gel or aftershave balm.

Storage matters. Keep your fragrance in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Light and heat break down fragrance molecules, reducing their quality and longevity.

Finding your signature scent is personal. Take your time exploring different options until you find one that makes you feel great.
